Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems exist in the transition zone between the marine and land environment. However, like many parts of the world, mangroves in Da Loc Commune, Hau Loc District, Thanh Hoa Province have been severely distroyed. Consequently, in 2005, the typhoon named Damrey had swept through the
sea dike, causing serious consequences to the social and economic life of the local people. Recognizing the roles of mangroves, an area of 200 ha of mangroves has been planted in coastal areas of Da Loc Commune with community-based management practices. The study results found that 100% of the
interviewees have positive comments on the effectiveness of mangrove plantation, rehabilitation and protection in local community. On the environmental point of view, 97% of the local people reported that mangroves can reduce the damages from the storms. In terms of economic development, 57% of
people said that their income has increased since mangrove forests were replanted with the economic value from mangroves approximate 65 million VND/ha/year. Community-based mangrove restoration activities have brought the socio-economic effects for local communities and the useful lessons in
mangrove management.
