Research to assess the impact of urbanization on flood in Cu De river basin - Da Nang city

Abstract

Urbanization in the downstream of Cu De river has changed the natural topography and inundation distribution. In the limited conditions of hydrological data, MIKE UHM model and Curve Number (CN) were used to calculate the flow boundary for the MIKE 21 hydraulic model. Calibration and validation were performed with flood elevations recorded in the 1999 and 2009 floods. To assess the impact of urbanization, scenarios with the present and past topography were simulated. The results show that, with urbanization, the flooded area could increase by 12km2 , of which, in Truong Dinh village the flooding level increased significantly from 1 to 2 m. It was also found that the flooded area decreased by about 5.6 km2 due to the high embankment areas and the area from downstream of Hoa Trung dam to the beginning of Thuy Tu canal. These results are expected to serve as the basis for future urban development and flood response plans
