Abstract

This paper presents the spatio-temporal variability of surface water area for Can Tho city by using a time-series of 124 Sentinel-1 images in the period from 2016-2020. The results showed that (i) the variation of water surface area consists with the change in water elevation in seasons, (ii) the large value of water surface area often occurs in flood seasons, with a value ranging from 91.03 to 735.61 km2 (approximately from 6.3 to 51.07% of the studied area), while the small value appears in dry seasons and equals from 76.10 to 404.97 km2
(about 5.28 to 28.12% of the area of interest), (iii) the largest water surface area appears delay from 3 to 24 hours in comparison with the occurrence of the maximum water surface elevation at Chau Doc station. The image process was performed using a Java Script language program on the Google Earth Engine cloud computing platform and high performance
computing from Google server, resulting in significant reduce of computational time.
