Mekong Delta rural water supply situations and development measures
Abstract
The Mekong Delta region has a population of 18 million, of which 80% lives in rural areas. Currently, approximately 77% of the region's population has access to good quality water, and 34% has access to the water that meets the QCVN02:2009/BYT standard. In order to enhance rural water supply in accord with the National Strategy for rural water supply and environmental hygiene towards 2020 as well as the Development plan for the Mekong Delta region towards 2012 with a vision of 2050, it is necessary to assess the current rural water supply situation in the Mekong Delta and provide comprehensive solutions which encompass both construction and nonconstruction programs, technical and technological solutions, and the choice of rural water supply methods, water resources, scale of the works, investment capital, and rural water supply management methods.
