Amplitude and phase relationships for inference of tidal harmonics

Abstract

The number of harmonic constituents has influences on tidal prediction, but they are limited by the duration of the observed record which has been used for tidal analysis. It is possible to increase the number of harmonic constituents analyzed from a short data record by using an inference method based on relationships for amplitude and phase of tidal constituents having the same type. Several relationships have been found based on the tidal equilibrium theory. However, these relationships may be altered from the theory by the actual conditions of an area. This paper presents the relationships for amplitude and phase of tidal constituents derived from observations in Vietnam. These relationships can be used to separate certain constituents when the series of observations is short.
