Abstract

The landfill in Trung Son ward is the only concentrated landfill in Sam Son City that has been in operation since 1997 with a capacity of handling 25 tons of solid waste per day. This is an open landfill, so it affects the lives of people living around it and needs to be rehabilitated or relocated. This study was conducted to provide a scientific basis for proposing and calculating the treatment of waste after sieving (called waste on sieve) to remove soil and humus. Research results show that the waste on the sieve is mainly waste from the
yard, wood (31.88%), and plastic (20.86%). Food waste is quite small (0.02%). The average moisture content of the waste is 60%. The study has also determined that the optimal pressure for the waste is 10 T/m2 . With this pressure, the average density of the waste increases from 690 kg/m3 (before pressing) to 1,290 kg/m3 (after pressing). The average weight and volume of the waste decrease by 20 and 41% after pressing, respectively. The average moisture content of the waste after compaction is 25%, and the compacted waste can be treated by incineration and energy recovery to generate electricity.
