A CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF FORMULAIC EXPRESSIONS IN LINGUISTICS RESEARCH ARTICLES

Abstract

The study aims at identifying the similarities and differences in the use of formulaic expressions in 40 English-medium and Vietnamese-medium linguistics research articles in domestic and international journals. Drawing on the framework of Hyland (2008), the results revealed that the two corpora shared a number of similarities in terms of frequency of Research oriented, Text oriented and Participant oriented expressions. However, regarding citation, English corpus used higher proportion of formulaic expressions than Vietnamese one. This meant Vietnamese authors paid less attention in citing previous studies. Thus, this study offers the implication that academic writing courses and research article writing training workshops for students and teachers should place emphasis on the use of proper formulaic expressions of citation in order to enhance the quality of manuscripts when they are submitted to prestigious national and international scholarly journals.
