Patient Safety Culture Among Healthcare Workers: A Cross-Sectional Study at the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology in Hanoi, 2024
Abstract
Objectives: Describe the views of health staffs on patient safety culture at the Natonal hospital of Odonto Stomatology in 2024. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from April to December 2024 involving 213 healthcare workers at the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology in Hanoi. Data were collected using the Vietnamese version of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were performed using SPSS version 20.0 for data analysis.
Results: The overall positive response rate regarding patient safety culture among healthcare staff at the hospital was 74.6%. The highest positive perception was reported in the domain of teamwork within units, with 98.1% of respondents indicating favorable views. Similarly, high positive responses were observed in feedback and communication about errors (92.5%), awareness of patient safety (92.5%), and management support and actions promoting patient safety (87.8%). However, certain aspects received notably lower positive responses. Only 51.6% of staff perceived a non-punitive response to errors, and just 13.6% reported a high frequency of event reporting, indicating areas where improvements are needed to strengthen the overall safety culture.
Conclusion: The research results show that the rate of health staffs to the patient safety culture is quite high. However, several areas require improvement, particularly in error management and the frequency of incident reporting. Therefore, hospital leadership should prioritize enhancing training programs and implementing policies that reduce penalties for self-reported errors, thereby encouraging healthcare workers to proactively report incidents, fostering a learning environment from mistakes, and strengthening the overall patient safety culture.
