Exploring the spiritual factors contributing to the patient’s recovery process at Lam Dong Rehabilitation Hospital
Abstract
Objective: The patient's recovery process required holistic care from different resources. Vietnam faced the burden of diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart attack etc. Traffic accidents and injuries were also one of the leading causes of death among adults. Together these hardships caused negative effects to economic and social quality of life in Vietnam. When experiencing illness or physical injury, patients often felt disconnected from their network of social support. This paper aims to explore the spiritual factor that helps patients connect with themselves, their families, their communities to support the treatment – rehabilitation process. Methods: This paper examines the social and spiritual factors that supported recovery in 10 lived-experience stories of recovery from the patients at Lam Dong Rehabilitation Hospital from March to October 2019. Main findings: Resilience and responsibility, hope, religious belief, and emotional support will be considered as the key spiritual factors. Conclusions: Spirituality played a vital role and be considered as the way we make meaning of our experience of life. In social work practice, when conducting an assessment, it is a critical need for cultural sensitivity of social workers in working with patients in recovery, in order to implement social work ethical principles and professional standards, and to individualize services for every patient.
