The role of Social Worker at Vietnam National Children's Hospital and the method of professionalizing social worker

Abstract

Objectives: Social workers are responsible for implementing activities such as support for patients; connect patients to social services, mobilize social participation in supporting and education. The study was conducted to understand the implementation of the role of social workers, feedback and satisfaction from the patients, patient’s families and health workers. Based on that, some solutions are proposed to professionalize the social worker in the hospital.

Methods: The study was conducted from 12/2014 to 6/2015, by using quantitative and qualitative data with 100 families of patients whom is treated at Vietnam National Children's Hospital  and 27 in-depth interviews with health workers and medical social workers.

Research results: Many roles of medical social workers in the hospital (specifically the Vietnam National Children's Hospital) are implemented such as supporting, connecting, education. The research results show that the implementation of the role of social workers still faces some shortcomings and difficulties but has received positive feedback and satisfaction evaluation from patients, families as well as health workers. This shows that professional social workers in the hospital is extremely important.
