ASSESSING IMPACTS OF THE NATURAL DISASTERS ON AGRICULTURE IN LAO CAI PROVINCE AND PROPOSING PREVENTION MITTIGATION MEASURES

Abstract

Lao Cai is a province heavily affected by natural disasters and climate change. The most common natural disasters occurring in this area are extreme and damaging cold spells, frost, flash floods/landslides, hot weather events and drought. Although there are some progress on natural disaster prevention and climate change adaptation in Lao Cai province, it has not yet met the requirements of agricultural production development. The article is based on local statistics and surveys (at the district level) to objectively evaluate the impacts of natural disasters and climate change on agriculture production, local’s needs on these data, and then propose preventative and adaptive measures for agricultural production in Lao Cai province.
