Abstract

The study was conducted based on the 1991 - 2020 observation data of daily average maximum temperature (Tx) collected at 17 meteorological stations in the South. Calculation results show that Tx has not reached the threshold of heat waves event at Ba Ria Vung Tau station in the last 30 years. Although there is a very clear homogeneity in terms of topography and climate, there is a very clear difference in heat waves characteristics between stations in the South. The heat waves season usually comes earlier and ends later at stations in the Southeast; arrive late and finish earlier in the Southwest of the South. In the Southeast of the South, heat waves event is usually concentrated in February - April; and around April - May in the Southwest region. The frequency of occurrence of heat waves event and the number of extreme heat waves event are higher in the Southeast than in the Southwest. During the El Nino year, heat waves usually comes later and ends later, and the season length in the El Nino year is usually longer than in the La Nina year. During the El Nino year, heat waves is intense and occurs more widely than in the La Nina year.
