Disease pattern of upper 16 year-old patients who received physical examination and nutrition counseling at The National institute of Nutrition in 2012
Abstract
Proper nutrition plays an important role for the prevention and treatment of diseases, especially nutrition-related non-communicable diseases. A cross-sectional study was conducted to describe the disease patterns of upper 16 year old who received nutrition counseling at the National Institute of Nutrition in 2012. Results: 2,067 subjects aged from 16 years old were examined including blood tests and nutrition counseling. The prevalence of chronic energy deficiency (CED) was 33.2%, osteopenia/osteoporosis - 21.5% (15.6% for students), and micronutrient deficiency - 19.4%. The prevalence of CED among those aged 16-19 years old was higher than that among subjects older than 20 years old. There was a difference in the prevalence of CED, overweight, osteoporosis, blood lipid disorders among occupational groups (p < 0.01). Conclusions: CED and osteoporosis are the two diseases with the highest prevalence, and osteoporosis is even observed in young people. Therefore, nutrition counseling is important in order to improve the knowledge, support the treatment process of chronic nutrition-related diseases, especially CED and osteomalacia/osteoporosis.
