Abstract

A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2015 among 600 nurses in Viet Duc Friendship hospital, with 2 objectives: (1) to describe the prevalence of stress among nurses, and (2) to identify the association between the prevalence of stress and workload/work pressure and work relationships. The study applied 2 self-report questionnaires about the stress with the short-form version of Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) and some work related factors. The result showed that nurses with stress accounted for 18.5%, especially at normal and mild levels. The study found such factors relating to the stress in nurses as being in managerial positions, work relationships with co-workers, and conflicts with superiors. Specifically, those nurses in concurrent managerial positions had a 5.2-fold risk of stress (95% CI 1.5 – 18.1); those nurses with normal/bad relationship with coworkers had a 2.3-fold risk of stress (95% CI 1.2-4.6) and those nurses ever having conflicts with superiors had 4.3-fold risk of stress (95% CI 1.9-9.4) compared to those in the comparison groups.
