Access to harm reduction programs among female sex workers in Buon Ma Thuot city, Dak Lak province
Abstract
Information-Education-Communication (IEC), free distribution of condoms and lubricants, and HIV testing and counseling are the key harm reduction interventions for female sex workers (FSWs) that have been implemented since 2005 in Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak Province. This paper aims to describe the current situation and factors associated with the accessibility of these harm reduction interventions in this FSW population in 2014. This study used a cross-sectional design. Structured interviews were conducted with FSWs during March-May 2014 in Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak Province. The study showed that 34.1% of FSWs reported receiving communication materials on HIV/AIDS, 53.8% received free condoms, 74.2% knew where to get examination and treatment services for STIs, 62.9% knew where to get tested for HIV, and 40% reported ever having tested for HIV. Factors associated with the accessibility of harm reduction interventions among FSWs included: duration of sex work, type of sex work (free or managed), reception of communication materials, knowledge on HIV, and self-assessment of being at-risk for HIV. This study highlights the need to enhance harm reduction services for FSWs, especially the provision of communication materials on HIV using an outreach model. Young FSWs who work in entertainment areas, sexual partners of FSWs, and pimps need to receive more interventions. Interventions need to promote HIV and STI testing for FSWs. It is necessary to continue promoting outreach work, thus assuring the availability of harm reduction services for this population.
