Abstract

Background: In Vietnam, 76% of disease burden was attributed to non communicable diseases (NCDs). This analysis of alcohol use is a component of the Vietnam Public Health Association’s survey on risk factors of NCDs in Tien Hai and Thanh Binh district in 2018.

Methodology: Two-stage cluster random sampling was utilized to select 809 participants from communities. The World Health Organization’s STEPS package in surveillance of NCDs risk factors, which was validated and used in the national survey 2015, was used in this study.

Findings: More than one fourth of the sample was current drinkers. On average at a single occasion, 5% and 13,4% was the percentage of high-end drinking, while the proportion of participants engaging in heavy episode drinking was 6.9% and 15.6% in Tien Hai and Thanh Binh, respectively. About one third of current drinkers reported to drive within two hours after drinking in the past 30 days before the survey.

Conclusion: Risky drinking, especially drink-driving, was common in rural area of Thai Binh and Dong Thap province in 2018.
