Assessing climate change adaptive capacity of local people in Phuong Dien Commune, Huong Khe District, Ha Tinh Province in 2018

Abstract

Viet Nam is considered as one of the most affected countries by climate change. Phuong Dien Commune in Huong Khe District, Ha Tinh Province is vulnerable to climate change and suffers from natural disasters every year, mainly floods. The cross-sectional descriptive study on 452 people in Phuong Dien Commune was conducted to assess the adaptive capacity of people to climate change in 2018. The results showed that 11.3% of the people were assessed as being able to adapt to climate change at a very low level, 51.8% at low level, 29.4% at moderate level and 7.5% at high level. The adaptive capacity regarding infrastructure aspect was at the highest level. For other indicators such as the support when natural disasters occur, economic potential, social organizations, technology and technology aspects were evaluated at low levels. The climate change adaptive capacity among women was statistically significant higher than that of men (p <0.05). The Fatherland Front, local authorities in Phuong Dien Commune should facilitate and provide timely and effective assistance to local people in the context of natural disasters, and extreme weather events.
