Abstract
The study aimed to estimate survival probability at 5 years following diagnosis and determine prognostic factors for rectal cancer mortality in Hue city. Retrospective data from medical reports of patients with rectal cancer who were confirmedly diagnosed and treated in Hue central hospital from January 2008 to April 2013 was analysed. Using the Kaplan-Meier method, the survival probability of patients with rectal cancer was estimated at 5 years following diagnosis. The prognostic factors for mortality were studied using Cox proportion hazards models. Overall survival rate at 5 years following diagnosis was 61.3%. Prognostic factors for mortality were time of treatment delayed (HR=14.51; p=0.033); the tumor was not detected on rectum examination (HR= 35.26; p=0.014); tumour in mediate location (HR=66.69; p= 0.002), poor differentiation (HR=26.78; p=0.004), late stage at diagnosis (stage III: HR= 19.17; p=0.040; stage IV: HR= 13.69; p=0.031); without radiotherapy (HR=6.10; p=0.023) and without doing exercise (HR=11.36; p=0.006). 5- year survival rate following diagnosis of patients with rectal cancer in Hue city was lower than those in previous studies in the country. Early diagnosis and treatment is effective solutions to improve their survival time.
