Abstract

* Background: Aging population in Vietnam is a major concern. The number of the elderly is over 10 million in Vietnamby 2018. Quality of life (QOL) of senior citizens is still a new issue in the country.

* Methodology: A cross-sectional study with a sample size of 1900 old people was undertaken to describe the health status and QOL of elderly people in Chi Linh district, Hai Duong province and Kim Boi district, Hoa Binh province in 2018 using a questionnaire to measure QOL of the elderly people.

* Results: The result indicated that 2 out 3 elderly people faced at least a chronic disease. The average score of the elderly’s QOL was 7 out of 10 (226.6 ± 25.4). The lowest score was financial and the highest score was mental domains. Mental domain was the only domain to have high score. The majority of the old people (77.8%) has a moderate QOL score; while 9.4% and 12.8% had high and low QOL score, respectively. QOL of the elderly seemed to decrease when their age increased.. Most of old people satisfied with different domains of QOL. However half of them did not satisfy with their health and working ability. This study results were a basis for piloting and implementing an intervention model to improve elderly people’ QOL.

* Conclusions: QOL score of the elderly people in the two study districts in 2018 were moderate.
