Quality of life among the –year-4 students at Thang Long University in the academic year of 2018 - 2019 and associated factors

Abstract

Objectives: To assess quality of life among the year-4- students at Thang Long University in the academic year of 2018 - 2019 and identify some associated factors.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out with the participation of 400 year-4- students using a stratified random sampling technique. The study subjects were requested to fill in an administered questionnaire - the SF12 (12 – item Health Status Survey). Data was entered with Epidata 3.0 software, and then analyzed using SPSS software version 22.0.

Results: Results revealed that the mean score of quality of life of the study subjects were 62.3±18.1. The highest scores were witnessed in physical functioning domain (78±25.1), followed by bodily pain domain (74.6±20.6), role physical (70.8±40.3), social functioning (64.9±24.1), role emotional domain (56.7±43.2), mental health domain (54.2±17.1), vitality domain (48.1±22.2) and the lowest scores were for gerneral health domain (40.5±22.3). In addition, 29.25% of the surveyed students showed to have high quality of life, 44.75% were adequate, 23.25% were low and 2.75%were very low. Female studentsstudents with higher learning outcomes, suffered from chronic diseases, illness/accidents and stressed events had lower scores of quality of life as compared to other students.

Recommendations: There should be appropriate intervention activities including enhancing health education and communication, providing psychosocial supports for students especially disadvantaged people and those affected by mental disorder and chronic pain, as well as intergrating contents related to quality of life in learning curriculums.
