Premarital sex and its correlates among students at Hanoi University of Home Affairs, 2015
Abstract
A survey aimed to estimate the proportion of premarital sex and its associated factors was conducted with 405 students of Hanoi University of Home Affairs. This cross-sectional study used an anonymous self-administrative questionnaire as the data collection tool. The study found that the overall proportion of premarital sex was 23.7%. These rates among male and female students were 35.0% and 20.9%, respectively. Students who had more open attitude towards premarital sex, who had watched pornography, who had used alcohol or illicit substances, who had gone to bars or night clubs, and who had friends having had premarital sex were more likely to have premarital sex. Meanwhile, students whose parents were living together, whose parents usually communicate with them about love, sexuality and reproductive health were less likely to have premarital sex. In order to promote safe sex among students, there should be comprehensive interventions targeting at both students and their family, university as well as policy makers.
