Knowledge and practice on neonatal tetanus prevention among ethnic minority mothers with children under 1 year old in Dong Phu district, Binh Phuoc province-2012

Abstract

This is a cross- sectional analytic study was carried out in Dong Phu district- Binh Phuoc province in 2012. Structured interviews were conducted with 181 ethnic minority mothers with children under 1 year of age with the following objectives: 1) To describe knowledge and practice on neonatal tetanus prevention among ethnic minority mothers with children under 1 year old, and 2) To determine the association between some factors and knowledge and practice of the mothers. Results: About 22.1% of the mothers had sufficient knowledge about neonatal tetanus prevention while 78.5% of mothers had proper practice of neonatal tetanus prevention. There is a relationship between knowledge of neonatal tetanus prevention and the mother's education level, number of children, ethnicity, occupation, and religion. In addition, the mother's practice on neonatal tetanus prevention is asociated with education level, religion, occupation, economic status and age group.
