The role of Sociology in cultural studies

  • ĐINH THỊ VÂN CHI

Abstract

This article clarifies the role of sociology in cultural studies from three aspects. Firstly, sociology provides a distinct system of concepts and methodologies for studying culture from a sociological perspective, which has been effectively applied by Vietnamese scholars in numerous specific studies. Secondly, sociology offers a practical foundation for monitoring, assessing, and forecasting cultural changes in modern society through field studies, community surveys, and structural-functional analysis of cultural phenomena. Thirdly, sociology helps connect cultural studies with social life and the practical needs of communities through the application of cultural knowledge in areas such as family relationships, traditional craft villages, beliefs, rituals, etc. As a result, cultural studies not only affirm their academic value but also enhance their applicability and contribute directly to community development.
