ChatGPT: Artificial Intelligence to support learners of English at tertiary education

Abstract

ChatGPT is a machine-based communication which is attached by Artificial Intelligence (AI), so it can answer any questions or talk like humans. Since 2023, ChatGPT has been popular to everyone in the world for its great influence on many areas of life and work in terms of technology. However, it causes some controversial issues for people in the educational aspects. On the one hand, as a virtual supportive tool, ChatGPT can significantly help teachers by giving learners answers to assignment or homework, leading to individualizing learners’ autonomy. On the other hand, learners might degrade their capacity or skills in learning for competence. This study has found that ChatGPT is really good at communicating and writing, but lacks critical thinking and it also released that a low number of university students could work on ChatGPT effectively. Ultimately, although ChatGPT is an excellent achievement of the industrial revolution, learners always need teachers’ guidance because it is not a human, indeed
