ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND LANGUAGE EDUCATION: THE IMPACT OF GLOBAL TRENDS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR VIETNAM
Abstract
The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing about profound changes in global education, particularly in language education, where the demand for personalized learning, timely feedback, and the development of communicative competence is growing rapidly. This study aims to examine the impact of global trends in AI for language education and to identify their implications for the Vietnamese context, given the current lack of comprehensive syntheses and international comparative studies in this field.
The study employs a synthesis of secondary data combined with thematic analysis of academic publications, policy reports, and policy and institutional documents published between 2019 and 2024. The findings indicate that AI and generative AI are fostering personalized language learning automating feedback, and supporting assessment, while simultaneously raising challenges related to academic integrity, linguistic bias, and ethical governance. In Vietnam, the integration of AI into language education remains fragmented due to the absence of competency frameworks, pedagogical guidelines, and a well-aligned learning resource ecosystem. Based on these findings, the study proposes policy, pedagogical, and teacher capacity development implications to promote the sustainable integration of AI in language education.
