The current status of household solid waste management in Tan Thuan Dong commune, Cao Lanh city, Dong Thap province
Abstract
The 50 household solid waste (HSW) management in Tan Thuan Dong commune, Cao Lanh city, Dong Thap province was surveyed and analyzed 30 waste samples. The survey results showed that the average about 0.54 kg/person/day was used, and 84% of the respondents segregated their waste, but 34% of them reused it. Meanwhile, the majority (92%) sell plastic bottles and metal cans for recycling. Their HSL is stored in bins (62% of households) and plastic bags (38% of households). The majority of the organic waste (74%) and hazardous waste (76%) are treated by using collection services, but most of the inorganic waste (90%) is sold to recycle. However, some households burn organic waste (10%) and inorganic waste (4%). Most of interviewees understood the impacts of solid waste on the environment and health, and local garbage collection services. However, the households used collection services (76% of households) and joined local waste management activities (28% of households). The analysis of waste samples showed that the average amount of waste is 0.45±0.18 (kg/person/day) and organic waste had the highest rate of waste mass by 66.45%. The average moisture content of solid waste samples was 68.72%. There should be solutions to propagate and encourage people to reuse, use collection services and practice solid waste management well.
