Impacts of climate change on agricultural production in Hanam island, Quang Ninh province
Abstract
Climate change is becoming more and more complex, unpredictable, and causing serious effects on the economy in general and agriculture in particular. Ha Nam is a small island located in the southwest of Quang Yen town, Quang Ninh province with a low-lying topography, mostly below sea level. Agricultural production of the island contributes over 50% of the agricultural production of Quang Yen town. However, the island is extremely sensitive to climate change. Agricultural areas on the island are facing the challenges of coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion, and lack of clean water. This study presents an assessment of the climate change impacts on agricultural production in Ha Nam island, including impacts on cultivation, animal husbandry, and agro-ecosystems. Based on the finding of the study, the authors proposed several solutions to help the agricultural sector on the island respond more properly to climate change, contributing to the development of sustainable agriculture in the future.
