Abstract

From the late nineteenth century, following the French conquest of Vietnam and the decline of the Qing court, China’s influence over Vietnam waned. However, during the first half of the twentieth century, as revolutionary activities in Vietnam faced harsh repression by the French colonial authorities, the revolutionary center shifted to southern China, particularly in areas bordering Vietnam. This article analyzes the influence of the political situation in China and its interplay with Vietnamese patriotic and revolutionary movements in the first half of the twentieth century. It highlights
how the changing dynamics of Chinese politics provided both opportunities and constraints for Vietnamese activists, thereby shaping the trajectory of Vietnam’s national liberation movement.
