REMOVAL OF NITROGEN IN LANDFILL LEACHATE USING THE CONTINUOUS SBR TECHNOLOGY

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim to improve the treatment effect of landfill leachate with continuous SBR technology, especially for nitrogen removal. The influences of the operational factors that can strongly affect the effectiveness of treatment process such as hydraulic retention time (HRT) and periodic processing cycle were specifically studied. The results indicated that the continuous SBR technological system with the operational conditions of 4 days retention and 5 hours processing cycle (180 min aeration, 40 min mixing, 60 min sedimentation and 20 min decantation) the treatment effects of N-NH4+, TN and COD reached approximate 99 %, 75 % and 76 %, correspondingly. Under similar operational conditions, comparative treatment experimental results indicated that the treatment effects of landfill leachate contaminants of the continuous SBR technology higher than that of the ordinary SBR technology, especially for nitrogen
composition (TN of treated landfill leachate reached VN standard 25:2009/MONRE, A Column)
