Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the current status of the generation and management of agricultural by-products (rice straw) and solid waste (fertilizer packaging and pesticide packaging) in My Tu commune, Can Tho city, and to propose management solutions through field surveys and interviews with 30 households. The survey results showed that farmers cultivate two rice crops per year. With 139 hectares, the total average amount of straw generated is 1.980 tons, the amount of straw burned in the field is 0.502 thousand tons, estimated CO₂ emissions (115.71 thousand tons), CO (2.74 thousand tons), and NOx (0.25 thousand tons). Fertilizer packaging and pesticide bottles generate an average of 4.6 kg/ha/winter-spring crop and 4.79 kg/ha/summer-autumn crop. However, the management of agricultural by-products and solid waste in the area still has many limitations. The study proposes several solutions for managing agricultural by-products and solid waste in rice cultivation, including encouraging farmers to adopt technical innovations, conducting propaganda and training sessions to improve knowledge, building collection pits, providing economic and technical support, and implementing legal regulations for environmental protection.
