19. Research on the current status and proposed solutions for pig farming waste management in Vi Thanh city, Hau Giang province
Abstract
The study was conducted to assess the current status of pig farming in Vi Thanh city, Hau Giang province. This article was written before Resolution No. 76/2025/UBTVQH15 of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly of Vietnam on arranging administrative units took effect. According to Article 1 of Resolution 1668/NQ-UBTVQH15, Vi Thanh city is reorganized as follows: Vi Thanh city, Hau Giang province is changed to Vi Thanh ward, Vi Tan ward, Hoa Luu commune of Can Tho city. The research employed direct interviews with 64 pig-farming households across 8 communes/wards. The results indicated that pig farming in Vi Thanh is primarily household-scale and small-scale, with a total herd of 2,855 pigs raised by 175 households. Notably, 100 % of pig-farming households could not identify the breed of pigs they were raising, 94 % depended on industrial feed, and 81 % used open pens. The estimated annual pollutant load included 20,841.5 m³ of wastewater, 46.95 tons of BOD₅; 10.42 tons of total nitrogen, and 3.28 tons of total phosphorus. The economic efficiency was positive, with a return-on-cost ratio of 1.35 and a benefit-on-cost ratio of 0.18. The current state of waste management, however, still has many shortcomings. Some households have installed biogas tanks, but treatment efficiency remains insufficient. Wastewater discharged after biogas treatment continues to contain high levels of nutrients and COD.
