14. Application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to the development of land unit maps supporting agricultural production in Van Don Special Economic Zone, Quang Ninh province
Abstract
Van Don Special Economic Zone has great potential and advantages for developing agricultural production, especially fruit cultivation. The area covers a total of 58,477.9 hectares, including 42,392.5 hectares of agricultural land, which makes up 72.49 % of the total. To create a land unit map that supports the assessment of agricultural land potential, the study surveyed 41,147.2 hectares using six classification criteria: soil type, slope, soil texture, soil depth, irrigation, and drainage conditions. Using GIS technology, six individual thematic maps were produced. By overlaying these maps with ArcView 10.3 software, the study identified 38 distinct land units. These results, combined with detailed descriptions of each unit, provide an important foundation for evaluating the agricultural land potential of Van Don Special Economic Zone in Quang Ninh province.
