Abstract

The Red river delta is the second largest rice bowl of Vietnam and also the key economic region of the North, so its pressure on environmental protection is huge. In addition, the livestock sector also has a fairly high and stable growth with an average growth rate of about 5 - 6 % per year. Therefore, livestock waste management is also a matter of concern in the Red river delta. This study applied the Material Flow Analysis (MFA) model to quantify the nitrogen flows in the Red river delta in the period 2000 - 2020, thereby, assessing the impact of the habit of reusing livestock wastes on the quality of the surface water environment. The modeling results showed that the biggest sources of nitrogen emissions into the aquatic environment were rice paddy fields, livestock farming and domestic wastewater. At the same time, the study also assessed the contribution rates of different nitrogen sources to the rice paddy field and the proportion changes among these sources during the 20 years.
