Abstract

This study presents a greenhouse gas inventory for agricultural activities in selected coastal communes of Ninh Binh province, Vietnam, for the year 2024. Following the 2006 IPCC Guidelines, emissions of CH₄, N₂O, and CO₂ were estimated from rice cultivation, livestock, fertilizer application, and rice straw burning. The total agricultural emissions of the studied communes (Giao Hoa, Giao Thuy, Giao Phuc, Giao Hung, Giao Binh, and Giao Ninh) were approximately 143,410 tCO₂e. Methane was the dominant gas, with rice cultivation and livestock contributing 94.7 % (135,848 tCO₂e) and 4.6 % (6,625 tCO₂e) of total emissions, respectively. In contrast, CO₂ emissions from fertilizer use (791 tCO₂e; 0.55 %) and rice straw burning (146 tCO₂e; 0.1 %) were relatively minor. The findings underline the importance of rice-based systems in coastal agricultural greenhouse gas inventories and provide insights into potential mitigation options tailored to local conditions.
