36. Assessment of the current status of municipal solid waste management in the central urban area of Tuyen Quang province and proposal of solutions
Abstract
The central urban area of the new Tuyen Quang province is facing numerous challenges in municipal solid waste management due to population growth and urbanization. This study assesses the current status of municipal solid waste generation and management through field surveys, composition analysis, and household interviews in Tuyen Quang city. The results show an average generation rate of about 0.8 kg/person/day, with organic waste accounting for over 55 %. The collection rate reaches approximately 96 % in the urban core. However, the system still relies mainly on landfilling, lacking an effective source separation system. Based on a SWOT analysis, the paper proposes several solutions, such as enhancing waste separation at source, investing in collection and treatment infrastructure, promoting community awareness, and improving the institutional framework to fit the new context.
