VietnamChina relations from a “Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership” Toward a “Community with a Shared Future”
Abstract
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China (18 January 1950 – 18 January 2025), this article reviews the development of relations between the two countries since the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership framework (2008) to the present. It assesses the current state of cooperation across the main pillars of politics, economy, security, and socio-cultural exchange. By applying international relations theories, the study clarifies the strategic goals, the intertwining of interests, and the important shifts in Vietnam-China relations within the new geopolitical context. It also examines the process of upgrading bilateral relations from a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership towards the building of a “Vietnam–China Community with a Shared Future of Strategic Significance.”
