The competence of gaining knowledge and communication is one of the three components of natural science competence – the specific competence in Natural Sciences. Assessment is oriented towards developing students' qualities and abilities, emphasizing process assessment. Process assessment is a form of assessment for the improvement of learners and is one of the measures to develop the learning nature competency. In this article, we have investigated the current situation of applying formative assessment to develop the competence of gaining knowledge and communication in teaching Natural Sciences, thereby proposing measures to apply formative assessment in project-based learning with the topic of “Matter and its changes” of Natural Sciences for grade 7 to develop the competence of gaining knowledge and communication of students
