Abstract

Lan Khai's forest fiction is especially loved by contemporary readers, not only because of the “exotic flavor” but also because of the writer's new and unique perspective on the landscape and people of the mountainous region. The ideal view of the unity relationship between man and nature in medieval literature or the illusion of harmony and unity between man and nature in romantic literature were all eroded in his work. This study shows that mountainous people and nature in Lan Khai's forest fiction no longer carry the polarization between “center” and “margin”, “civilized” and “barbarian” as in medieval literature and travelogues in Nam Phong Journal.
