Abstract

The main purpose of the study is to focus on identifying the percentage of land area in each new urban
area, which should be reserved for the construction of an ecological lake based on extreme rainfall
causes inundation in urban areas in Viet Nam Mekong River Delta. The research results show that it is
necessary to reserve a percentage of the lake area as F = 10.3% of the urban area, with a depth of lake
as H=4.5m, it is possible to store all of the rainwater causing inundation to be feasible and reasonable.
This is really a proactive solution to mitigate inundating based on the lake's multi-purpose approach
such as minimizing inundation due to extreme rains; ensuring fresh water supply for urban areas to
reduce the need to exploit groundwater, thereby minimizing land subsidence in urban areas in the Viet
Nam Mekong Delta. In addition, the research results provide a meaningful useful method in urban
inundation management and management of rainwater resource exploitation; help planners make policy
decisions in new urban planning in the Viet Nam Mekong Delta.
