Abstract

Viet Nam has more than 6.500 reservoirs which play a very important role in water regulation for water supply demands of socio-economics. However, many structures are poorer in time and are being influenced by climate change in addition; thus reservoir safety is being much concerned by ministries and sectors. To ensure the safety of reservoirs in the flood season, rainfall and flood forecast and inundation warning due to flood releases from reservoirs is very important to establish a flood control and safe regulation measures for reservoirs. This article summarize results achieved from development of tools for flood forecast to reservoir and inundation warning for downstream due to flood releases from reservoir or due to dam break. This tool is developed for small and medium size reservoirs. Results from applying this tool to some reservoirs show that it is very convenient; quick assessment can be obtained without detailed data requirement especially river topology, thus it is suitable for applying to reservoirs which have been built in limited data used for design.
