Abstract

The study focused on assessing impacts of hydropower reservoirs and transport infrastructures on downstream floods in Ba River Basin in Phu Yen Province using MIKE models. The study results showed that there will be no significant impacts on downstream floods (compared to the natural conditions without the reservoirs) if the operation rules are strictly followed. However, the reservoirs have small flood storage capacity so they have to release in case of big floods to ensure dam safety; on the other hand the release time and compliance to the operation rules may result in damages to the downstream.

The existing transport infrastructure somehow formed obstacles in floodways, raising downstream water level and increasing water flow dynamics downstream of culverts on roads.
