Study on Red river water level decline under impacts of water storage and release from large-scale upstream reservoirs

Abstract

Recently, Red River water level at the Hanoi hydrological station has been lowered in dry season and particularly to a minimum record of 0.1m in February 2010, which has severely affected water supply to water users, especially water supply for agriculture in the downstream. There are many causes of that decline but it is important to know which one is important and of natural or human impacts. The article focused on two major impacts of the declining Red river water level, i.e. operation of the upstream reservoirs and variant water diversion ratios from Red River to Duong River. The article also studied the variations of water level and discharge correlation curve in dry season.
