Hydropower development on Huong river basin, limitations and the measures to improve the benifits

Abstract

     In general, Huong river basin has large potential of water resources for requirements of social and economical development in Thua Thien Hue province and the region. In recent years, on the basin many projects in irrigation and hydropower have planed and constructed. However, on the concepts of the sustainable development and environmental protection, the hydropower projects on Huong river basin have shown the limitations and disadvantages which must be studied and assessed. This paper provides the picture of planning and implementing status in hydropower development, and also mentions about the problems in operation and management of these hydropower projects. From these, the study proposes some measures and options to mitigate negative problems and improve the effects of the hydropower projects in province.
