Pressing environmental issues in hydropower exploitation in Ba river basin and their management and control

Abstract

     Ba River is one of major rivers in the Central and Central Highland of Vietnam and it has rich hydropower potential. In the recent years a number of big and small hydropower projects were developed at a fast pace. Although this development has contributed a significant amount of electricity for the country's demands, it has lead to some environmental issues which require urgent attention and management. This article assesses the practical situation of the hydropower development in Ba River system to identify specific environmental issues. The article provides practical recommendations for management and control of the water resources with a view to address those pressing issues step-bystep for the sustanable development of water resources in the river catchment.
