Abstract

River bank erosion problem is the great concern of managers and people living in the riparian area. In many locations on the Red River, erosion situation has occurred in both the vertical and horizontal direction, directly destroying large areas of crops and infrastructure, particularly threatening the stability of dikes of Red River. Typically, bank erosion situation has occurred at Tam Xa location (next to the bifurcation between Red and Duong Rives) with an average rate of 3÷5m after each rainy season. Besides the bank erosion problem, this area is also facing with the state of increasing rapidly flow separation from the Red River to the Duong River during the period from 2000 to present. This issue has led to serious consequences such as unsafe system of dykes and canals on the Duong River waterway and the difficulty of taking water for agricultural production along the Red River. This paper presents the research, analysis and evaluation to determine the causes for the increased flow separation into the Duong River and mechanism causing bank erosion in the area. Based on causes and mechanisms, proposing measures to respond.
