Abstract

Vietnam has a coastline of more than 3200 km in length, in which the main sea-dike systems have been constructed to protect residential areas, but some others are not stable yet. Besides, the dikes have been built by several generations, with non-uniform quality and limited dike height, which result in overtopping during storms due to high waves, strong wind and high tides. The storm number 7th occurred in 2005 (namely Damry) that caused many problem to safety of sea dike a long coastal line in the north part of Vietnam. If the dike is breached, salty water can go to the lowland and causes many problem to people who live in a sea dike area. This paper will show the problem caused by storm number 7th of 2005 to the sea dike in the north and the measures should be used to repairer the temporary dike (core dam) during typhoon time and later, and some lessons can be learned from this.
