Abstract

The Central coastal strip of Vietnam includes 13 coastal provinces, from Thanh Hoa to Binh Thuan. In the last years, these provinces have been faced with lost of life and serious economic damages due to extreme natural disasters i.e. typhoon, heavy rain, floods and land slide. WRU has been granted a research project namely "Scientific solutions to ensure safety for civil infrastructures in the Central, Vietnam to cope with unusual natural disasters". Researched have been implemented in a period of 2009 to 2011. Results concerns methodologies, scientific basis and applications have been obtained with a focus on risk reduction toward unusually extremal natural conditions. This paper presents some findings of the research on i.e.: database of various forms of dangerous weather and hydrological conditions and forecasts of landslides in the Central. Paper introduces the findings on technical solutions to ensure the safety of traffic works, irrigation, constructions of the central architecture under extraordinary disaster conditions. The research was based on the analysis of the survey, site visits in the Central and update the scientific advances in computer modeling, methodology, application software, engineering standards in Vietnam and worldwide. The findings are rich in scientific content, consistent with practical situation in the Central, reliable, easy to transfer to serving disaster prevention in Central Vietnam
