Study on water storing operation rules of Son La and Hoa Binh reservoirs

Abstract

    The Son La and Hoa Binh reservoir cascade system play an important role in hydro power generation, flood control and water supply for downstream areas in the Red River. This article summarized the result of real time operation for this system to improve the efficiency of water supply, electricity generation and flood control. Based on analyzing the characteristics of the Red river system, inherited and mathematical model methods, we initiated a "reference frame" to limit the water level of the reservoirs based on the Hanoi's water levels. The results of the research show that the water levels in Son La and Hoa Binh reservoirs could be kept in +202,00m and +104,00m respectively when the water level in Hanoi is less than +4,00m. Eleven historical flood events were testing operated to demonstrate that the water level in these reservoirs could be reduced to safety levels if a big flood coming in 72 hours.
