Abstract

This research will analyze and propose a simple, accurate and stable method for velocity components in a two-dimensional model to apply to the finite difference method in solving shallow water equations on the staggered grid. This is an extremely important step in construction hydrodynamic model and it directly affects the stability of the model. Therefore, the solution scheme for the velocity components is very important. This study will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the central difference scheme, first and second order upwind schemes. In the case study, the Red River area from Son Tay to Hung Yen is selected. These schemes were applied to compare the results. The research results were also compared and discussed with observation data profile. The research results indicate that the central difference and first order upwind scheme have good results with simple elevations. Second order upwind scheme is a good selection of complex terrain. In construction the hydrodynamic model, it depends on the research purposes and terrains.
