Abstract

Overtopping is one of the major causes of the failure of earth dams in Vietnam and in the world. Dam degradation, failure, insufficient flood resilience have increases in the risk of unsafety to existing dams especially under the abnormal climate change. Research on the mechanism of soil erosion under the effects of overflow has been paying attention. In this article, the Phan Lan 1 dam incident due to overtopping in the flood on August 3, 2013 was simulated using EMBANK model. A series of experiment to determine the coefficient of erosion function and critical shear stress of soil was also performed. The results of the experiments were used as input data for EMBANK model. The results of this research can be applied to provide prompt responses for the dams with high risk of overtoping.
